New forte instance is invisible somehow

I replaced my Stream instance at home digitalesparadies.de by a new Forte instance forte.digitalesparadies.de. It was installed on a new Raspi 5.

Forte was installed by the debian-setup.sh, see #^https://codeberg.org/fortified/forte/pulls/15

I was able to register two first users one admin account and an additional ordinary user ojrandom@forte.digitalesparadies.de
Everything looked fine until I tried to connect to somebody. Then I checked the domain by a ping. It failed, but must have worked during the installation. Otherwise the creation of the certificate by letsencrypt would have failed, I guess.

I had to stop my activities, so I could not find out the cause and fix the dynDNS update. Today I am back again to have a look. As guessed, the update of the dynamic IP did not work. The download of the update script failed during installation for some reason. The script includes a check now to prevent this behavior.

Now my errors...

I try to connect to somebody in Forte (you), Hubzilla (one of my accounts at Hubzilla). Both fails.
I try to connect one of my Hubzilla accounts to ojrandom@forte.digitalesparadies.de. It fails.
The page #^https://forte.digitalesparadies.de/directory does show my own instance only. ("only this hub" is unchecked. I played around with all of the checkboxes. No change.)

Any ideas how this can be fixed?

Is there something wrong with the server that is used as "directory server"? Something in this direction?

Nothing at all happens in the access.log of Apache2, nor in forte.log, nor in the error log php.out on #^https://forte.digitalesparadies.de

Any ideas?

Because #^https://forte.digitalesparadies.de/communities shows no communities, I think my instance is a kind of standalone instance. In the .htconfig.php it is not. Hmm. No idea. I will install Fort again using a different subdomain.

Something I did not mention. The install script stopped because the checksum was not correct. It is this part inside the script...

I ignored this and installed composer without the check and the script (by hand). A couple of days ago I installed a new Hubzilla instance using the same script (basically the URLs are changed). That installation gave no errors for composer.

I just replaced the Forte instance with Hubzilla on the Raspi at home.

There is still a "spare Raspi" in the flat of my mother. So I will give Forte another try, probably in summer.

The application logs? If you used the release branch, try the dev branch. If you used the dev branch, try the release branch. Nobody is developing forte, but I do try and fix bugs.

I'll look into it, but this is absolutely not a good day. And there are no good days in the foreseeable future.

That's what I did fear a little bit, to be honest. Your reaction was not the famous another-coffee-and-fixed-in-10-minutes-answer. As said, my next try with Forte will be in summer time (norther hemisphere). ALL THE BEST TO YOU!

The logs can get to be overwhelming, but they are a great place to start. The software is pretty good about logging anything out of the ordinary, and at the highest levels also provides the data at nearly every important step. If I even had a good place to start it might be a fixed-in-10-minutes-answer. It's a foreign system where I'm assuming connections aren't being made or are being made incorrectly. Or is it that OK and only other communications broken? I don't know. I assume the Hubzilla nodes have pubcrawl enabled, because forte only speaks ActivityPub. Otherwise all I can do from here at the moment is make completely wild guesses and I don't even have the data to test them on. So if you continue down this path, please help to reduce what I need to do to even find the problem. The code seems daunting, but the processes aren't that hard.

There is no directory server. Well there is, but every node is its own directory server and will take some time to learn the network around them.

Yes.

And a missed chance to find and fix something if there is anything to fix. (There is a good change that I did a silly thing two times in a row that caused the behavior. On the other side... The - basically - identical script managed to install Hubzilla, same Raspi-OS image, same internet router.)

May be you started to thing about and feel better to have it solved ...just a thought.... If it is of use for you:

I could install Forte again on this Raspi and give you the ssh login and pass to adminer. This Raspi is a little bit for experiments anyway. I have two other Hubzilla instances running.

Installing Forte with the help of the script is about 1.5 h time or me, including dynDNS, subdomain, all image copying and updates. I could do it on Thursday and would be glad to help to make Forte installation more stable.

I'm using a DDEV based environment I set up for Hubzilla dev work. You can find it here:

It's basically a wrapper around docker that takes care of the boring stuff for you. I've added a few niceties to it to make some Hubzilla specifics easier. Like setting up a test db, running the unit tests, generating coverage reports, running PHPStan static analysis on the code etc.

Which reminds me: I have some updates I need to finish documenting and push soon.

@Zap The "composer" seems to be missing.

I followed #^https://getcomposer.org/doc/00-intro.md

util/udall runs again

Now I have two other issues

1. I did not find a way to get rid of the required user input "yes" (compser is asking every time "Continue as root/super user [yes]?") if I run /var/www/zotcron.sh. This needs more investigation from my side. I am thankfull of any ideas. Yes, I am aware of #^https://getcomposer.org/doc/03-cli.md#composer-allow-superuser
2. Composer detected issues in your platform: Your Composer dependencies require a PHP version ">= 7.4.0". is shown if I open one of my instances for example #^https://misty.digitalesparadies.de/

I guess it is time to upgrade Debian and PHP.

I just tested this during the upgrade to Debian 11 (Raspi) of my second instance. Yes, it works.

Both servers are upgraded and running again.

Somebody should add "composer" to the .homeinstall.

If no one is faster I can add this and test in a virtual maschine. (I am on holiday at the moment. So it won't happen in the next days.)

Does anybody know if there will be a difference (for ZAP, Roadhouse, Streams,...) if composer is intalled using apt-get
