Why do they call it a server when it's not a server but rather an allotted area on a server?

same reason why a lot of devs call a simple program listening on a TCP port a "server".

It stems from when Discord was still trying to attract the TeamSpeak audience, which worked through individually-hosted servers.
Internally, Discord refers to servers as "guilds", but went with "server" publicly because that was easier for the average user to comprehend. The term stuck, so they've never bothered to change it. Even if they did, there'd likely be resistance from people who don't want to adapt their terminology, so they'll likely continue to refer to guilds as servers indefinitely.

Aah, so I wasn't imagining things. I spent thousands of hours of discord (maybe even tens of thousands?) and when I started using Discord, it really felt like an upgraded version of Teamspeak. Being able to have access to the text chat without being in the server for audio chat is really nice, though I would like better ways to organise my server list and friends list :psyduck_sweat:
